Minnesota West proudly announces the appointment of Jermaine Smith as the new head coach for its football program. With an impressive background in coaching and a rich history as a player, Smith brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to developing both athletes and individuals.

Smith joins Minnesota West after a successful season at Campbell University (FCS), where he served under the leadership of Mike Minter. During his time at Campbell, Smith held various roles, including Defensive Analyst and Camp Director, before being promoted to outside linebackers coach/co-special teams coordinator.

Prior to his time at Campbell, Smith made significant impacts at Livingstone College (NCAA D2) and Fort Lewis College (NCAA D2), where he served as Special Teams Coordinator/Linebackers Coach and Defensive Coordinator/Linebacker Coach, respectively. At Livingstone College, Smith's coaching led to the development of the conference defensive rookie of the year, showcasing his ability to nurture talent and drive results.

With over 20 years of coaching experience across various levels of football, including stints in arena football, Smith brings a unique blend of expertise and passion to Minnesota West. His top-ranked playing career included collegiate success at Northeast Oklahoma A&M and Central State University. Additionally, he gained professional experience in the AFL, CFL, and NFL, signing a free-agent contract with the Green Bay Packers in 2000.

Off the field, Smith is deeply committed to community engagement and youth development. As a native of Eden, North Carolina, he founded a non-profit organization in Charlotte aimed at serving at-risk youth, reflecting his dedication to making a positive impact beyond the game.

In accepting his new role, Smith expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to shape the lives of young athletes and instill in them the values of respect, integrity, accountability, and servant leadership. He emphasized his belief in the power of sports to foster personal growth and resilience, highlighting his journey as a testament to the transformative potential of athletics. Accompanying him to the area are his wife and six children, adding to the sense of community and commitment that he brings to his new role.

"I am honored to join the Minnesota West community as head coach and to continue my lifelong passion for coaching and mentoring young athletes," said Smith. "Together, we will strive to create a championship culture that extends far beyond the football field, empowering our players to excel as individuals, teammates, leaders, and members of their communities."

Minnesota West Community & Technical College looks forward to the positive impact Coach Smith will undoubtedly have on its football program and the broader campus community.
